Since its initial appointment in 1968 by then Interim President Herman B Wells, the Indiana University Committee on Historic Preservation has actively encouraged historic preservation efforts across Indiana. For more than 50 years, the Committee has supported programming for Hoosiers seeking a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indiana’s past. The Committee’s major responsibilities include:
- Administration of the Cornelius O’Brien Lecture Series.
- Planning and conducting, in cooperation with Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, the annual state conference on historic preservation.
The Cornelius O’Brien Lecture Series, established in 1972, engages qualified speakers from the United States and abroad to address Indiana communities on a variety of topics relevant to the appreciation, understanding, and preservation of historic buildings and landscapes.
The Committee is a proud co-sponsor of Indiana’s Preserving Historic Places Conference, held since 1969 in a variety of Indiana communities.
